Welcome to a new term at Bristol SU! Here is your first update from us, your officer team. We've been working really hard to start making change for Bristol students this year - here's what we've been doing for you so far:
Leah your Equality, Liberation, and Access Officer has been working to support students affected by recent reports of drink spiking on nights out in Bristol. For more information about how to spot when someone’s been spiked, check out the Bristol SU Officers Staying Safe Instagram highlight.
Your officer team are also working on a research project called No Means No – looking at students’ experiences of sexual harassment in Bristol – the results of the first stage of the research will be released in the coming weeks along with a number of recommendations for the university to improve student safety in Bristol.
Seb your Undergraduate Education Officer has been working with the university to open up as many study spaces and libraries as possible – university libraries will be increasing their opening hours and opening in the evenings across the next few weeks.
Did you know you can also book a study space in an unused teaching room on the University of Bristol website?
Ruth your Student Living Officer is continuing with their Harm Reduction work from last year – providing students with the tools and knowledge to make informed choices around drugs and alcohol. They packed 1300+ harm reduction boxes for students living in university halls, and are running weekly All About Drugs drop-in sessions in collaboration with local charity The Drop. These free drop in sessions are a safe and confidential space for you to access advice and information about drugs and alcohol, as well as free drugs reagent test kits.
Keep an eye out for more events and activities around Harm Reduction coming at the end of the month.
We’re now in Black History Month! Several of us have been involved in preparations for the month – Oba's been working on planning some sport-related events, Leah spoke at the unveiling of the Henrietta Lacks statue, and Ifrah spoke at the opening of The Beckford. You can find out more about what’s on and get involved on the Bristol SU Black History Month webpage.
We’ve had a busy month supporting the delivery of Bristol SU’s Welcome Week. We’ve all attended and hosted lots of different events - particular highlights include Oba and Ifrah’s tour of our Give It A Go events, delivering your Welcome Talks, and Seb eating 5 chillies in 30 seconds at the Hindu Soc Give It A Go.
It’s been amazing to meet you all in real life and to find out a bit more about what you’re excited about, and the changes you’d like us to work on over the next year!
