On 25 - 28 April, Bristol SU’s Black Lives Matter campaign, organised by Seun, Black and Minority Ethic (BME) Officer, and Hannah, Equality Liberation and Access Officer, will take place around campus, highlighting current issues for people of colour in Bristol and across the world.

 

The Black Lives Matter campaign aims to create awareness around the state violence and racism people of colour encounter. UBEM (University of Bristol Ethnic Minorities) have partnered with Bristol SU to run the campaign and have involved a number of other charities and societies as well.

Our Black Lives Matter campaign is based on the The Black Lives Matter movement which is an international black liberation movement. BLM was started by three queer black women in response to the ongoing killings of black men, women and children by police. This expanded into an international movement against state violence, mass incarceration and the institutionalisation of black people. Additionally, here in the UK the movement is focused primarily on deaths in police custody and injustice black people face in the UK - For example, black people are 6x more likely to be stopped and searched than their white counterparts.

 

Through the different events, the campaign will present different issues being addressed by the BLM movement and how students can be involved.

 

Generation Revolution Film Screening

On 26 April, UBEM presents a film screening of the documentary Generation Evolution. The documentary shows London’s new generation of black and brown activists and their mission to change the social and political landscape in the London area. Afterwards, the directors Cassie Quarless and Usayd Younis will answer questions about the documentation in a small Q&A session.

Y-Stop: Stop & Search Workshops 

On 26 April, the UBEM welcomes the charity Release. Release will will run three workshops in relation to their campaign Y-Stop. The campaign aims to educate and equip young people with the tools to interact with the police safely. Two facilitators will provide three workshops.

The Stephenson Room at Bristol SU will host the three workshops that will run at 12-12.20pm, 12.40-1:00 pm and 1.20-1.40pm. Tickets are free. To learn more about Y-stop, click on the link:  http://y-stop.org/about

 

Black People and the Criminal Justice System in Collaboration with the Howard League for Penal Reform

On 27 April, the UBEM and Howard League for Penal Reform Society will form a panel discussion. Three panelists will discuss the inherent racism within the criminal justice system. The discussion will end with a Q&A session.

The panel discussion will take place at the Pugsley Lecture Theatre from 7-8.30pm. Tickets are free.

 

The 13th Film Screening

On 28 April the Odlum Room will host a screening of the 13th. This award winning documentary by Ava DuVernay explores the intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States. Followed by a Q&A.
