A wide range of societies have been affiliated this term at Bristol SU. Read on to find out more about what our groups do, and how to get involved!
Art History Bristol is a group dedicated to fostering encounters with art which revise the existing canon, creating more equal access and inclusivity. They believe that Art History should be for everyone and, as such, they welcome all students - regardless of their area of study and pre-existing art historical knowledge. They have lots of exciting events planned to create safe and open spaces for the exploration of the world of art, and to provide opportunities for those with interests in careers in Art History to develop key skills and gain practical experience.
The dedicated society for the passionate or interested bakers out there! They aim to host ZOOM bakes, post interesting baking tutorials and articles, to run community bake-sales and to have an all-around amazing time baking! Join their Christmas Cookie Competition this winter to win some spectacular prizes and help support Nightline during lockdown!
BBPS aims to unite students in their love for beer pong. Small competitions will occur regularly with new game styles, drinks and prizes. Large competitions will be hosted once a term and will invite people from all over the University to compete. At home challenges will be common for the near future. Rest assured that what they lack in people, they more than make up for in fun and offer unique challenges to test your skill. Sign up to join their brand-new community!
UOB Golf Society aims to provide weekly golf at Ashton Court Estate for people of all abilities. Even if you haven’t played, this group will have a place for you. They promote friendly competition and are planning to hold regular social events for members to help relieve the stresses of uni life. So why not give it a go?
Make a Smile is a volunteering project that aims to bring happiness to children with disability or illness. It’s difficult for some children to experience magical places like Disneyland so they bring the magic to them by dressing up as their favourite characters! (There are other roles available if you’re not fond of dressing up).
Normally, they would be visiting paediatric wards, Christmas parties or easter egg hunts by local charities but this year, they are doing virtual visits. They have a range of online projects to get involved in so give their page a visit!
This is the club for anyone who loves adventure. They combine map reading, running, mountains, river crossings, and competition all into one sport. They run in rain, snow, day, or at night. This is a sport where you can battle waist-high heather, ford rivers, and scramble up crags all against the clock. They compete at national events and BUCS and this year they hope to host the English Universities’ Orienteering Cup. If you’ve picked up running over lockdown, and are already bored of the pavement, then swap it for the forest!
Pagan Society is an open-minded community exploring magick, divination, rituals and Pagan pathways. Whether you're a seasoned practiser, fledgeling witch, or simply curious, everyone is welcome. Witchy workshops, spellbinding speakers, guided foraging and great events, they do it all!
Bristol and the South West has an amazing Pagan tradition, including Glastonbury and Stonehenge, which they can't wait to explore and share with you all. Their group is also dedicated to open communication and the wellbeing of their members. They run regular talking circles as well as encourage members to explore research into Pagan history.
How do you keep fit? When we hear this, we naturally skip to physical fitness. However, it’s important to keep our minds fit too! PROJECT:TALK Bristol Society does exactly that; their mission is to change views on mental health by pioneering mental fitness in our community. Learn valuable skills in mental health first aid, meet like-minded people at socials, attend workshops with inspirational people and get involved with awareness events and campaigns. You can even train as a PROJECT:TALK CIC accredited Mental Fitness Instructor or apply for funding and support to kickstart your own initiative!
SWSS are an active internationalist socialist group on campus. They stand against racism, sexism, homophobia, imperialism and more. From the street to the books, they want to build a radical student movement, outside of parliamentary politics.
Join them to learn, discuss and organise to build a better society, and make some like-minded friends along the way. Being a student branch of the biggest far-left party in the UK, they have 60 years of experience and knowledge, to support them in their radical education and protests.
They meet regularly on Wednesday at 5:15pm, on Zoom (for now) and look forward to meeting you!
Speak up is a public speaking society for people who don’t like the spotlight! It is often taken for granted in seminars and presentations that students are comfortable with public speaking. However, there are so many people who find it difficult and anxiety-inducing. If the thought of public speaking gives you butterflies, then Speak Up is the society for you! They provide a comfortable environment where people with confidence issues can practise speaking in a workshop setting, and host lots of fun, varied socials where people facing these difficulties can get to know each other!
