Bristol SU have jointly won Student Engagement Award at the Environmental Association of University and Colleges Green Gown Awards. The Green Gown Award was awarded to the University of Bristol, the University of the West of England and both University’s students’ unions.
The Award was for the Green Capital Student Capital project, which engaged students in Bristol’s year as Green Capital. Working together, the universities, their students’ unions, the city and more than 800 local organisations harnessed the energy of students to deliver over 100,000 extra hours of volunteering and engagement activity to help make positive economic, social and environmental sustainable changes.
Supported by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the project also helped to change perceptions of the student body and their role in the city, capturing the imagination of city leaders, businesses, communities and policy-makers.
Adela Simonova, final year Law student and Bristol SU Sustainability Officer said, "I'm really proud of what Bristol SU and the University have achieved through the project. It demonstrates the positive impact students make in the City. It's important we maintain a commitment to a culture of sustainability at Bristol - through embedding sustainability in the curriculum, and supporting students to volunteer and create change alongside their course."
The University of Bristol also won The Public Sector Award in the Bristol Post and Bath Chronicle Environmental Awards this week.
