Thursday 10-05-2018 - 14:00

Chaos: University of Bristol Physics Society have won Best Academic and Careers Society at the National Societies Awards 2018.

Chaos were the only Bristol SU society to be shortlisted for an award and picked up achievements in two categories as they were also named as runners up for the Best Society Award.

This announcement comes shortly after the news that Chaos is one of the societies that has been awarded Gold in the SU’s Balloon accreditation scheme. The scheme aims to recognise societies that excel at meeting the SU’s core values of Equality & Diversity, Representation, Collaboration, Sustainability and FUN.

Chaos is the largest departmental society at the University of Bristol, and third largest society overall with a total of 601 members. Chaos aims to be a platform to create a community in the physics department, and offer students the opportunity to learn, bond and improve their employability.

Chris Meardon, society president, said "Winning this award is an incredible honour and a true recognition of the hard work put in by the Chaos committee throughout the year. We have made significant progress over recent years bringing us to the largest departmental society at the University of Bristol creating academic, social and career-related opportunities for our members, with over one thousand attendees to our events, which are more frequent than weeks in the year."

One of Chaos’ aims this year was to try and become more inclusive. Efforts to achieve this include becoming the first society to launch its own LGBT+ Network, and working towards the formation of other liberation networks. The society also organises a parenting scheme that saw around 150 first year students assigned a family to help them feel welcome at university.

"They provide a wholesome environment, and make the department really have a community feeling" - Rate My Group 2018 response

From the events that they run to their very own cafe, PhysBar, Chaos have had a really positive impact on the physics community at Bristol.

Congratulations from everyone at Bristol SU!
