Happier Holidays

Written by Nura Alyah, Chair of the LGBT+ Network

Christmas can and should be a time full of love and joy, but for so many LGBT+ students, it can be a time that they're forced to leave a vital support bubble.

The LGBT+ Network is aiming to help students have happier holidays than they might do otherwise. We've created discreet crisis cards for LGBT+ students to pick up (available around the university) with a range of helplines and support tools that they can access if the holidays get stressful. You can pick up these cards at the Student Wellbeing Service; at the reception desk of the SU on the 3rd floor of the Richmond Building; and in the SU Living Room on the 4th floor of Senate House.

We'll also be running wellbeing afternoons just before the holidays, with the cards available to pick up, in order for students to let out stress and worries that they might be having in the run up to the winter break.

If you're LGBT+ and feel like you need the support, you can find the cards around campus. If you think it might be helpful to have something on hand over the holidays to remind you of the community you have in Bristol, please do feel free to take them with you when you see them. You can also email lgbt.bristolsu@gmail.com if you need signposting to any other support services.

If you're not LGBT+, be aware that your friends might be going home to a rough time. Check up on them and see how they're doing, and remind them that they've got a community in Bristol to come back to that loves them regardless.

Wishing a happy holiday to all the students in the LGBT+ Network: please remember you are loved for who you are by the community at Bristol, regardless. <3
