Bristol SU is home to over 330 affiliated student groups. Each of our student groups is run by a committee of students who lead their activities, run campaigns, host socials, and generally provide fun opportunities for students in Bristol. Have a look through Bristol's student groups, and try out the Student Group Finder here.
It's now time for our student groups to elect their new committees. Every group must have a President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Equality Officer and many groups have lots of other roles too. If you're interested in marketing, events, outreach, volunteering, leadership, finance, or inclusion, there'll be a role somewhere for you!
We've brought together 4 of our student group leaders to let us know what they love their role, why you should consider joining a committee, and how you can get involved!
Being President of The 93% Club Bristol has helped me develop my communication and problem-solving skills. In addition to connecting with fellow Bristol students, it has also been very rewarding to host events that benefit students and encourage social mobility discussions within the university.
Being part of the committee will allow you to shape the activities of The 93% Club Bristol, from outreach projects in Bristol to organising events. It also gives you access to a community and network of over 40+ 93% Clubs nationwide and the opportunity of helping to lead the activities of The 93% Foundation. This includes chances to create your own social mobility projects, facilitate nationwide events, and contribute to the Foundation’s leadership.
As Secretary you are responsible for organising events such as the freshers fair and club socials. Highlights this year for me have been the conversations we have had to make Rounders an official BUCS sport and also developing marketing skills through the creation of content for our socials in order to keep members up to date with the club activities!
Rounders could not be a more inclusive sport or society! Not to mention, playing a role in the running of a society shows commitment to something outside of your degree - so it is great to add to your CV!
I’m the current President of the Salsa Society. You can tell that I have loved being in the committee as I’ve been here for the last 3 years! I have gained leadership skills that are beneficial not only for my degree but also in general life situations. I have plenty of fun experiences to tell and made some friends for life on the way.
Yes, being part of a committee has responsibilities but believe me, it helps in your wellbeing and to have a balance with university workload. You won’t regret it! There’s always support from the rest of committee members and from the SU every time you need it.
Over the past year as President of WiSTEM I have been introduced to so many new people across all STEM disciplines. I have had the opportunity to network with countless companies and professionals, arranging talks and events for our members.
Being on a committee is so rewarding, especially knowing we have been able to make a positive difference to student life during such a turbulent year. I have loved working alongside a committee of incredible people, with the common goal of building a supportive community for all women & non-binary people in STEM! So why not apply to be on the 2021/22 committee?!
You can apply to be on the committee here.
Voting starts from 19 April.
RAG is a tad different to other societies, we aim to do all we can to raise money for our partnered charities, so every year you'll find the objectives and roles differ slightly!
As RAG VP, my main roles are to manage fundraising events and develop a sustainable rep scheme. My tenure on the committee has resulted in hitchhiking across the UK, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and hosting the Valentine's Ball.
Plus you have the fantastic flex of raising tens of thousands of pounds- the greatest CV fodder. For those wanting to make a difference, give us a try!
