Bristol SU has a number of societies which have been accredited with gold status on the Balloon Accreditation Scheme. We caught up with the Medical Law Society to find out more about their student group.
The University of Bristol Medical Law Society provides a platform for students to discuss bioethical issues, attend networking opportunities with leaders in the field and partake in debates. Whether you are a Law student, a medic, or a student of any other discipline interested in medico-legal issues, the Medical Law Society is for you!
Throughout the year we will host talks by academics, medical and legal professionals, health charities and the General Medical Council, along with article-based discussions and hold our second intervarsity Medico-legal Debate. Our intervarsity debate will provide the opportunity for YOU to get involved with a contentious medico-legal issue and test your advocacy skills against students from other distinguished universities while networking with notable medical negligence solicitors.
We work university-wide engaging predominantly law and medical students but are open to those of any discipline with an interest in medico-legal issues. You’ll probably find us making use of various facilities in the Law School and SU to host our employability events, socials and debating competitions. Although our base is the university, we are consistently working to make nation-wide connections. From liaising with leading law firms in the medico-legal field and multiple universities to engage in our debates, our learning experiences at UBMLS go far beyond the campus.
Despite being a society only in its infancy, we have had an incredibly successful first year! From hosting our inaugural Irwin Mitchell Medical Law Debate, collaborating with societies such as the Pro Bono society to hold Pub Quizzes and Careers events, through to working in our local community to create a Boccia club for athletes with high support needs, the last twelve months has been jam-packed! As a result of having collaborated with other societies on numerous events and having achieved an over 90% satisfaction rate in the Rate my Group survey, we’ve been recognised as one of the Gold Award Winners.
Entering into the second year of the creation of our society, this is an exciting year for us! Our plans for next year including growing to engage with even more students in the law school, medical school and beyond. We also have a whole host of exciting events planned such as socials and a series of lectures held by notable academics, lawyers and barristers. We look forward to seeing you there!
