Meet the Officer Candidates: Elections 2019

We are pleased to announce the list of candidates for our seven full-time elected officer roles!

 Union Affairs Officer candidates 

This role represents students in terms of how they interact with Bristol SU through democracy, communications and services, and leads on support for societies, volunteering and RAG.

Beth Mulley

  • Reclaiming the SU by prioritising student events and creating a Room Booking App.
  • Supporting every student voice by reviewing our democratic procedures and empowering minorities, genders and mental health across the University.
  • Creating an accessible campus by extending the U1 and U2 bus routes and ensuring refurbisments are geared towards student activities. 

Julio Mkok

  • Improving Student Experience: UoB/BristolSU App, free washing in halls and opening up lecture halls as study spaces during exam time.
  • More support to Societies: Benchmark achievement grants for societies and establishment of a southwest regional network for similar university societies.
  • Bringing the SU closer to students: Ensure SU presence in all Faculties and to change the election period to earlier in the year.

Max Langer

  • Build a single-use plastic free campus.
  • Sign the SU and University up to duty of care agreement and zero suicide pledge.
  • Reform the Annual Members Meeting to build an SU that listens to all students.

Nachan Fujiwara

  • Support societies: Lobbying for travel grants and more free activity spaces for societies.
  • Increase access for students: Revising deadlines for application to hardship funds to better reflect society joining times.
  • Encourage democracy: Streamlining election process to encourage a higher turnout through an SU app.

 Postgraduate Education Officer candidates 

This role represents postgraduate taught and research students on academic and welfare matters.

Chris Brasnett

  • Wellbeing service awareness of postgraduate specific issues.
  • Academic diversity and undergradute to postgradute retention.
  • More provision of study space for postgraduates.

Jackline Some

  • Campaign for more workspaces and study spaces for postgraduate students, particularly the postgraduates in the Faculty of Arts.
  • Campaign for fair pay and contracts for Postgraduates who teach.
  • Campaign for the university to increase support for post-study work visas and work placements.

Martha Herrera Bonilla

  • Lobby with the university to work towards a fairer and less stressful assessment design, working to change the make it or break it units, to give students more opportunities to get better marks.
  • Work with the different faculties to get more flexibility in choosing units and changes into our timetables.
  • Create workshops and social activities for the integration of international and home students.

Vaibhav Gokhale

  • Work with the University to install sleeping pods in libraries and study centres.
  • Considering the visa restrictions post Brexit, work alongside with Career Services to provide increased support and tailored guidance to International students.
  • Fight against the rising tution fees by continuing the Boycott NSS(National Student Survey) campaign.

 Undergraduate Education Officer candidates 

This role represents undergraduate students on academic and welfare matters.

Hillary Gyebi-Ababio

  • Address the lack of diversity in the curriculum across all faculties.
  • Supporting all students both financially and academically.
  • Campaign against the upcoming differential fees policy.

Mehul Pasari

  • Feedback: As a course rep, I realized that am a large number of students feel dissatisfied with the feedback and therefore pushing the faculties to improve the quality of feedback, will be an important priority.
  • Bus Service: Lobby with the university to provide free bus service facility for all students to far away venues (Coombe Dingle and Passenger Shed) during exam time.
  • Library Facility: Make more libraries 24 hours during exam season apart from the Arts & Social Sciences Library.

 Student Living Officer candidates 

This role represents students on accommodation, finance, and wellbeing issues, as well as on their interaction with the local community.

George Bemrose

  • We need to ensure that wellbeing support meets the needs of our diverse student body.
  • We need to prevent rent increases above the rate of inflation to protect both our financial and mental health.
  • Work with the University to reach their goal of being Carbon Neutral by 2030.

Karan Gupta

  • Free Laundry
  • Lower rents
  • Free bus to Coombe Dingle during exams

Millie Mark

  • Inform and support students about private renting.
  • Improve availibility and access of mental health services.
  • Enable more student involvement in environmental and sustainable causes.

Ruth Day

  • Push for a diverse and accessible counselling service with BME and multilingual counsellors, and counsellors trained in LGBT+ issues.
  • Cut the rent in halls and work on setting up a housing cooperative to provide quality and cheap accomodation for students.
  • Set up a food bank donation point in every Village, and have labelled halal and kosher food, and more vegan and veggie options in Source cafes.

Tom Parry

  • HEALTHY MINDS: Improve access to mental health services and advertise where help can be found.
  • HEALTHY BODIES: Promote STI testing and provide free condoms.
  • HEALTHY COMMUNITIES: Lobby the university reduce cost of halls and give advice on accommodation issues.

 Sport and Student Development Officer candidates 

This role represents students on sport, exercise and health issues, as well as on issues relating to students' personal development.

Amy Brook

  • Improve funding and support for intramural leagues, ensuring more people have the opportunity to participate in sport.
  • Ensure the university continues to work towards providing a regular bus route to Coombe Dingle including a free bus for sporting fixtures on Wednesdays.
  • Implement a system to ensure clubs who don’t compete in regular fixtures receive increased recognition and support.

Antoine Macquet

  • Improve the club experience by reviewing the Performance Sport system and support clubs so they can give back to students.
  • Increase the accessibility and inclusivity of sport at all levels so anyone can partake in physical activity.
  • Drawing the University's attention to the importance of sport in bettering mental health, as it is currently an afterthought in their Mental Wellness Strategy.

Marlo Boyd

  • Postgrads and student in later years of education need the same support as undergrads.
  • There is room for more cross-collaboration between sports clubs for a united and supported Bristol sporting body.
  • Use my sporting history, training and qualifications to promote participation in competition and volunteering for students' personal development.

 Equality, Liberation and Access Officer candidates 

This role represents students on equality, diversity and widening participation issues, and ensures that all students’ voices are represented within the SU and University.

Catreya Mably

  • Promote Equality and Community (Launch a study into disability at uni, keep participation in the sciences wide etc.).
  • 1st Year Focus (1st year reps in all societies and networks, mental health in 1st year and promoting SU's function to 1st years).
  • Tackle Post-Brexit Britain (Focus on mental health implications and prioritise them in the Mental Health Action Plan).

Jason Palmer

  • Creating a robust wellbeing service by pushing for culturally competent, issue representative and diverse counsellors as part of the University's wellbeing strategy, while tackling sexual violence and promoting support for victims.
  • Push for an academic oriented response to the BME Attainment Gap.
  • Represent students of faith through reducing clashes with religious holidays, lobbying for more culturally and religiously diverse food, and increasing prayer spaces on campus.

Lois Plummer

  • Diversify the university.
  • Improve the experiences of students with marginalised identities.
  • Reduce hate crime, victimisation, micro-aggressions and other forms of abuse.

 International Student Officer candidates 

This role represents international students on all aspects of the international student experience.

Adriana Molinares Gomez

  • Create an individual mentoring system for international students, it would be amazing if older students can help freshers with their queries. 
  • Increase the number of tours offered by AFT Bristol in partnership with the university, as they promote social interaction and allows international students to tourist at low cost.
  • Organize social events for international students from the very beginning of the term as sometimes the events take place later and it’s difficult to gather all the students. 

Duaa Alim

  • Safe space, Equal Education, Inclusion and Better Representation.
  • Support: Mental Health, Wellbeing, Accomodation, Finances, Academics, & Visas.
  • Brighter Future Prospects and Career & Postgraduate Oppurtunities.

Hadya Shawky

  • Making University more affordable
  • Improving international students' experience

Julius Ogayo

  • INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS VISA - I will fight to ensure that all VISA issues affecting International students to be addressed through implementation of a VISA policy favourable to all. This will address issues such as VISA duration and complications regarding employment arising as a result. 
  • TUITION AND ACCOMMODATION FEE - Lead in calling for reduction of high fee being paid by international students both for tuition and accommodation. I will also seek to advocate for an increase in University Bursary opportunities for international students facing financial difficulties. 
  • WORK OPPORTUNITIES AND CAREER SERVICES - I will lead in negotiating with University and the SU to set aside a fixed quota of the total job opportunities for International students. I will also seek to create, in conjunction with the University Admin, a portal or database through which empoyment opportunities and career services are advertised only to international students. 

Shailaja Tallam Laxman

  • Education Development : Support in navigating different styles of teaching and learning materials for all the students.
  • Student Development : Finding the right people to provide more information about the right to work, and not to pay council tax and help international students find part- time jobs and internships.
  • Social Development : Creation and facilitation of skill swap session, where we will have open community space for people to get together and swap skills, knowledge, history, and cuisines.

Srusti Thakur

  • Arrange a team of students, who would provide 24 x 7 pickup and welcome support, regardless of the date and time of a student’s arrival.
  • Arrange regular, fun and extra-curricular activities only for international students celebrating various festivals of different nations with students from different nations and English speaking sessions with students of different nationality.
  • Organize "Getting the best out of supervision" course (currently organized for PGRs only) for all students (Undergrads, PGTs and PGRs).
