New Bristol SU Spaces

Monday 27-01-2020 - 15:00

There will be two new SU spaces opening in Senate House and you have the opportunity to name them.

Bristol SU will shortly be opening two new student spaces within Senate House, at the heart of the University of Bristol campus. Work to transform Senate House into a dedicated student space is currently taking place, with building work expected to be completed in Autumn 2020. Bristol SU is looking for your support to help name the new spaces.

A new Bristol SU bar will open on the Ground Floor next to the new food court which is being built. This will be the perfect space to have a drink with friends, hold a small student group social or relax when not studying. Student can now vote from a selection of shortlisted names for the new bar.

The names which have been shortlisted are:

  • The Beckford - As well as being Bristol’s first Race Relations Officer, Carmen Beckford was one of the founders of St Pauls Carnival and is one of the Seven Saints of St Pauls.
  • The Mandela Bar - After Nelson Mandela, one of the founding members of Pan-Africanism and the first President of independent South Africa. It would be a revamp of the Anson Rooms bar name because it was called The Mandela Bar pre-2016.
  • The SU Social
  • The SU Hideaway

Julio Mkok, Union Affairs Officer, said:
“Students have told us that they need more spaces on campus to chill out, relax, banter and hang out with friends. The Bristol SU Living Room was the start of that. I’m really excited that Bristol SU are now going to be able to provide additional spaces for students as part of the university’s Campus Heart project.”

Another Bristol SU space will also be opening on the Upper Ground Floor. This space will provide an opportunity to reheat and eat your own food, make free tea or coffee and meet with friends. It will also be the perfect space for committees and communities to meet and launch or run campaigns from this space. It will also provide a place in the centre of campus to meet with SU representatives to find out more about what’s going on at the SU and how to get involved.

The shortlisted names are:

  • The SU Loft
  • The SU Hangout
  • The SU Hub

Voting on the names of the new spaces will take place online from Monday 27 January – Friday 7 February at bristolsu.org.uk/namingspaces. You can also vote on the new bar name in person in the Balloon Bar.

Further updates and images on the new spaces will be shared throughout the year ahead of the launch in autumn 2020.
