Meet this term's newest student groups...
Bristol Ahlul-Bayt Islamic Society is a group built on the foundations of the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him and his family) and his lineage's values, teachings, morals, and ethics. They aim to build a safe environment for the Shi'a community and to share their worldview with all those interested.
Their events include weekly Du'a Kumayl recitations, charity events, social events as well as hosting talks in collaboration with other societies around the UK. They are extremely grateful for this opportunity to represent Shi'a Muslims on campus. They look forward to welcoming you all!
Bristol Racing is the society for you if you have a passion for building things and love motorsport!
They are a student-led team entering the Greenpower Formula 24+ competition, in which teams design, build and then endurance race a small electric car. It’s a competition which will put your engineering skills to the test and give you the experience of working in a small-scale electric version of the WEC.
They also run several other activities alongside Greenpower if you prefer something more casual, including motorsport-based socials, construction challenges and talks (featuring numerous F1 engineers) which anyone can get involved in.
Bristol Sociology Society is a safe space for all like-minded individuals at UoB, whether you study sociology or are just interested in the subject. Their plan is to hold various different events, including, but not limited to: webinars, pub quizzes and socials, even study dates! Become a member today so you don't miss out on their upcoming events, including their Sociology Christmas Pub Quiz!
Bristol Vegan Vets is a community and support network for anyone studying a veterinary related degree who identifies as an ethical vegan or vegetarian, however anyone interested is welcome to join. They plan on hosting a range of socials including pub and discussion evenings, talks from guest speakers, and plenty of food related meet-ups! So, whether it’s to meet like-minded people, engage in some interesting debates, or relax over some good food, don’t hesitate to join!
Bubble Tea Society is a new society hoping to spread their love of bubble tea! They plan on running fortnightly events such as bubble tea crawls, make your own bubble tea nights and quizzes. They recently hosted their first event as a collaboration with the Baking Society for tea and cake, and are hoping to run their next event as a meet to collect bubble tea before a quiz!
Mergers & Acquisitions Society has a mission to educate and inform its members of recent merger and acquisition transactions, as well as making them more attractive to potential employers. They will host valuation competitions, write reports and produce quick, summarising videos about recent deals.
With free membership, their team offers high quality insight and knowledge which is not in the syllabus of any courses. This knowledge will help you to stand out and seem more professional in interviews and similar situations.
Origami Society welcomes students who are looking for a little break from a busy life by creating objects with paper. Origami is a traditional Japanese art of paper folding, and they will have lessons throughout the year to teach you how to fold various objects. To make things a bit competitive, they are also planning to have a paper aeroplane competition next term. They are planning on doing various collaborations with other societies as well. With a zen mindset, they are sure that origami will bring you serenity.
Reinforcement Learning Reading Group (BristolRL) is a society primarily consisting of post-graduate students (but they welcome all) who are researching or have a general interest in reinforcement learning. They have weekly meetings which involve talking, presenting, and discussing the latest research with a chance for students to present their latest work. There are also student-led sessions which have previously included watching and discussing lectures, group-reading of textbooks, and implementing algorithms. They also run socials including pub trips and board games. The society is a great way to meet people with similar academic interests with no prerequisite to joining apart from a willingness to learn and interact.
Rethinking Economics Bristol is part a global organisation campaigning for diversity in economics: diversity in people, ideas and curriculums. They aim to raise awareness of the issues with modern economics and what we can do about solving them. Whether you are an economics student or not, a passion to find unique solutions to real-world problems is all that is needed! So come along to their launch event in the new year for the opportunity to speak with the founder of Rethinking Economics.
Robogals are a volunteering project that goes into primary schools and teaches young girls and minorities all about STEM subjects and coding. They are open for anyone to join and you will have the opportunity to play with Lego Mindstorm robots and build a community. They will be going to primary schools on some Wednesday afternoons so if you are free please join them.
University of Bristol Alternative, Metal & Punk Society (AMPS) is a community for everyone interested in exploring and appreciating alternative music and culture.
They run DIY workshops, gigs (for local and student bands alike) and smaller socials like album listenings and coffee mornings. Through their sponsors, they not only offer their members a number of discounts in venues around Bristol but also opportunities such as industry shadowing.
They’re a space for self-expression, collaboration and meeting like-minded people… catch them at one of their coffee socials if you’d like to learn more.
University of Bristol Ice Skating Society (IceSoc) thought, with the opening of the new rink in Cribbs Causeway, that it was about time skating came back to UoB. Their aim is to get as many people on the ice as possible regardless of ability. Whether you've been skating for years and want to hone your skills, or just want to have some fun and learn not to fall over - this is the group for you!
They’ve got a lot of exciting stuff planned this year and what better time to join but the run up to Christmas! They can’t wait to meet you all.
University of Bristol Liberty Society promotes classical liberalism and wealth creating ideas. They welcome anyone who values liberty or wants to learn more about these ideas, regardless of personal beliefs. They plan to host prominent and esteemed liberal thinkers, the first of which is due to take place in the upcoming weeks. In addition, they have the support of many think tanks in book provision, personal/career opportunities (found in their periodic newsletter), and various other resources for members to tap into. They are eager to make their first year of affiliation exceptional and have a reduced first year of affiliation membership.
