Officer Update May 2022

Wednesday 04-05-2022 - 15:46

The last few weeks has been full of bank holidays, annual leave and celebrating the delayed graduations of students due to graduate in 2020. All of this has taken us away from our desks, but here are some of the highlights of what we’ve been working on.

Network Committee Elections

Last month we held the elections for Bristol SU Network Committees. These roles will support the Network Chairs to lead our networks which are representative bodies for students to build communities and create change through collective action.

You can see the results of the election here

Climate Emergency Day of Action

The Climate Emergency Day of Action took place on Friday 29 April and we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came and took part! If you missed it, you can check out some of the highlights on the Bristol SU Instagram.

Want to make a positive sustainable change? Start buying some of your weekly essentials in the Bristol SU Zero Waste Shop which will be open until the end of term.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week. We know many of you will also be revising, so we’re hosting a plant-potting session in the Bristol SU Living Room so that you can take a break.

There will also be a stall outside the Hawthorns throughout the week with Resilife and Wellbeing Staff handing out revision snacks and drinks and having a friendly chat with students who might need support.

Nationality and Borders Bill Event

Your International Students Officer Muazam has been working with the International Students' Network and Student Action for Refugees on a Nationality and Borders Bill panel event. This event will bring students an opportunity to learn more about the experiences of our peers who find themselves seeking sanctuary.

All profits from this event will go to the Sanctuary Scholars Legal Fund Emergency Fundraiser

Speakers

There have been a few events on campus recently which have sparked protests from other students, and we’ve had some questions about why these events are allowed to take place.

As a charity we are bound to uphold the law and allow freedom of expression, even where our views may differ from the speakers invited.

Bristol SU follows the University of Bristol Freedom of Speech Code of Practice and respects the rights of all our students to discuss difficult and sensitive topics.

We are also committed to supporting students who may be affected by the invitation of a speaker onto campus. We can help our groups to run an alternative event or put together plans to protest safely.

You can see more about our approach online

Fun Highlights

Seb attended the Bring a Boy cheerleading session which was run by Bristol Jets, Leah has been on holiday in Morocco and Ifrah attended the Global Lounge’s Grand Iftar in Wills.
