A few weeks ago the Education sector was thrown into chaos as thousands of students were given A Level grades that were unfair. At the time, we released a statement in support of the NUS petition to the government to right the wrong done to these students.
We welcomed the U-turn on A Level grades and were pleased that University of Bristol were quick to confirm that they would accept applicants who had met the terms of their offer.
However, we’re aware that the unanticipated increase in student numbers could have an impact on student experience. We want to make sure that this is mitigated so that student expansion does not come with a cost to student experience.
We’re talking to the university about this regularly and have made three key requests which we are hoping that they will commit to.
1) For student numbers to freeze in the year 2021/22 in line with the commitment made to last year’s Student Living Officer George Bemrose (acknowledging that this hasn’t been possible this year due to the circumstances).
2) For any deferrals which need to be made to not disproportionately affect Widening Participation students.
3) For student support services, such as wellbeing, to increase proportionately to student numbers.
We will continue to update you as more is confirmed.
