Monday 05-11-2018 - 16:35

Kurt Vile will be bringing his seventh studio album, Bottle It In, to the Anson Rooms on 8 November following acclaimed success since the album’s release date on 12 October.

There is a marked departure from his old sound, with harps, pianos and banjos incorporated, adding a new depth to his recognizable country pop sounds

As a founding member of the War on Drugs, with six successful studio albums under his belt and having recently collaborated with the likes of Courtney Barnett on the widely praised Lotta Sea Lice, Kurt Vile is no stranger to producing great records. The lead single for his last album ‘Pretty Pimpin’ went straight to number one on Billboard's adult alternative charts, sitting alongside the likes of Mumford & Sons and Coldplay. However, Vile has warned this Bottle It In won’t appeal his wider audience in the same way. Much anticipated after three years since his last solo release, Bottle It In revisits much of what is core to Vile’s own sound. The result is a record which is more deeply and unselfconsciously him than ever before.

His signature auto-biographical style carries strongly through Bottle It In, with Vile returning to the space he’s carved out for himself as a layman philosopher. His lyrics at times seem to be a stream of consciousness; musing on the seemingly mundane and everyday, Vile takes the listener on a journey of discovery. The album lacks a rigid structure, with one track bleeding into the next. This could be jarring, except it is offset by Vile’s easygoing lyrical drawl, set over complimentary melodies which gives the record a dreamlike feel.

Lengthy and inventive guitar riffs, which Vile is so well known for, come into their own in tracks such as ‘Mutinites’ and ‘Bassackwards’. Yet there is also a marked departure from his old sound, with harps, pianos and banjos incorporated, adding a new depth to his recognizable country pop sounds. Tracks to look out for include ‘Loading Zones’, the album's opening track which was released as a single last month, the second single ‘Bassackwards’, featuring over nine minutes of laid-back and sometimes reversed guitar sounds that give a warped psychedelic sound and the grey and moody ‘Cold Was the Wind’.
