Proper Jokes November 2018 Preview

Monday 19-11-2018 - 10:40

Off the back of October’s laugh-a-minute comedy bonanza, we have three brand new up and coming comedians, for your delectation. Our November series sees Gareth Richards, who has just taken his eighth solo show ‘Prophet’ to Edinburgh, the sharp, slick and expertly executed comedy of Michael Odewale and hilarious comedy duo Short & Curly. Find out more about each of them here and buy your tickets now.

Gareth Richards

Taking up his first solo show, “Stand Up Between Songs” to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2010, Gareth was an instant hit, finding himself nominated for the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer. Since then he has gone from strength to strength, taking a show to Edinburgh nearly every year. This year he performed his eighth solo show, “Prophet”, which showcased his trademark and “gorgeously low-key comedy songs” (The Guardian). He has recorded stand up sets for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 2 and also co-hosted Gareth Skinner’s Sony award winning Absolute Radio show for two years and still regularly fills in. He’s “a quietly clever craftsman with a big future” (Bruce Dessau, The Evening Standard).

Michael Odewale

Starting stand up at uni Michael Odewale now has a finely tuned tone, which balances an engagingly sardonic wit with sharp, slick and beautifully executed content. His stand up covers everything from pigeons to politics, the latter of which he addresses with a wry wit that is appealing. He has performed at some the UK’s most famous venues, as well as writing for BBC Radio 4 and performing on Chris Ramsey’s Stand up for Comedy Central. He was a finalist in both the Chortle Student Comedy Award and the BBC New Comedy Award. Taking the comedy world by storm, he will take his hotly anticipated debut show to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019.

Short & Curly

Comedy duo Short & Curly is made up of real life couple Rebecca Shorrocks (short) and Paul F Taylor (curly). Following a successful show in Edinburgh ‘Young at start’ their natural on stage chemistry is evident by the very first pun as they throw in a vast array of props and costumes, mashed-up sketches and hilarious songs. The pair have some amazingly bizarre ideas and their show “teases the crazy side we are encouraged to mask” (Define Arts). The pair have a knack for snappy dialogue and original ideals which are hard to rival. The result? “Completely hilarious and amazing… a laugh out loud fun fest” (Broadway Baby).

Expect side splitting performances from these three on November 22 in the Anson Rooms Bar from 7pm. Tickets are one sale - student tickets just £5, general admission £7. You’d be mad to miss it, so get your tickets here
