Hello! It’s time for the next officer digest.

The theme for this edition is LGBT+ History Month, which will be running throughout February.

LGBT+ History Month 2022

February marks the start of LGBT+ History Month and the theme for this year is ‘politics and art’.

To celebrate and commemorate, our officer team have partnered up with the LGBTQ+ Society and Trans Student’s Network to bring you a series of events, including arts and crafts, information stalls, quiz nights and sports sessions. To find out more, including event details and locations, you can visit our events page.

Leah (Equality Liberation and Access Officer) and Oba (Sports and Student Development Officer) will also be running the Rainbow Laces campaign, which they are working closely with Sport, Exercise and Health (SEH) on. The campaign aims to highlight LGBT+ individuals and allyship in sporting communities.

As part of this work, a number of LGBTQ+ B:Active Sessions will be taking place towards the end of the month. More details will be made available in the coming weeks via the SEH B:Active webpage.

The campaign kick-started with Leah and Oba handing out rainbow laces on 2 February to sports club captains and students.

We hope you will join us to learn and celebrate throughout LGBT+ History Month!

SHAG week

After the success of last year’s SHAG week, our Student Living Officer, Ruth Day, is bringing it back to coincide with Valentine’s Day!

SHAG week stands for ‘Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance Week’ and aims to promote healthy relationships and sex, alongside educating on key issues such as consent and safety. This term’s SHAG week will run from 14- 20 February and there will be opportunities for you take part in conversations on healthy relationships, get tested for different Sexually Transmitted Diseases and even put your knowledge to the test with a fun and informative quiz.

To find out more about upcoming SHAG week events, visit our website.
Finally, Resilife will be doing outreach at North Village on 24 January, to find out more click here.

Strikes

University staff could be taking up to ten days of industrial action during February and March if ongoing disputes are not resolved. Full strike dates and information on further industrial action can be found on Bristol SU’s website, where we are providing rolling updates.

Your SU Officer team are continuing to speak to senior staff members at the University about the strikes and are committed to mitigating the impact on the educational experience of taught students, as well as supporting our staff who are striking.

Your SU Officer team have also co-signed a letter alongside other Russell Group Students' Unions lobbying for UUK (Universities UK) & UCEA (Universities and Colleges Employers Association) to enter formal negotiations with the UCU (University and College Union) and make meaningful progress that will see a long lasting solution to the industrial disputes that have severely impacted the experience of students for many years.

VOI Partnership

Our Sport and Student Development Officer, Obafemi Alabi, is working on the early stages of a potential Voi partnership with SU representatives.

Oba and team are currently exploring the logistics of hosting Voi e-scooters across campus and holding ongoing discussions with Voi representatives. The aim of this partnership would be to reduce congestion across Bristol and embrace environmentally friendly transport options.
