Monday 10-04-2017 - 16:22

BUCS has awarded Bristol SU and University of Bristol Sport with a £4,500 grant to deliver the This Girl Can project.

BUCS has awarded Bristol SU and University of Bristol Sport with £4,500 of funding. This funding is a result of a very successful This Girl Can campaign last November.

This Girl Can is a project that aims to inspire women to get exercising regardless of their shape, size and ability. The project wants women to overcome their fear of judgement when doing sports. This Girl Can do so by encouraging women to beat their own barriers with slogans such as "Sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox" and "I kick balls, deal with it."

Through the British Universities and Societies Sport’s funding, the project can run for a longer time than This Girl Can week. In particular, This Girl Can will aim to engage underrepresented groups of female students. This Girl Can want to do so through culturally sensitive classes such as women’s only swim sessions and self defence classes.

Through a student survey, the students themselves have had an influence on which activities the grant will go to. As a result, The new programme will include classes such as Yoga, Pilates, Piloxercise Zumba, Beginner Spin and Weight Room take overs.

Additionally, the plan is to invest in mass participation events, workshops and guests speakers. Finally, the project will also recruit This Girl Can ambassadors to represent and raise awareness of This Girl Can.
