Welfare Badminton

Our Welfare Badminton sessions started a few years ago following a serious injury to our club captain. She wanted to keep playing, but we did some research and found that there were no opportunities here at the University to support this. Following several months of discussions and planning, we decided to invest in growing disability sport at the University and invested in specialised sports wheelchairs.

Thanks to the funding of several bodies, we were able to purchase these wheelchairs and they were unveiled in May 2018. We have an excellent relationship with Kingsdown Leisure Centre (close to the University campus) and they were happy for us to use their fantastic facilities. The sessions were then developed to offer an alternative way to experience badminton, including wheelchair badminton, blind and deaf badminton and mental health sport.

These sessions now run on a Friday evening from 19:00 to 20:30 and are open to anybody who would like to get active and have fun! Badminton is a sociable sport and we run another session in the hall at the same time so there are plenty of people to chat to. You are welcome to attend as often as you’d like and we’re happy to help you to improve your game or just have a hit.
