The winner of this award has achieved lasting impact helping students and staff alike to have a positive impact with a simple activity that they do every day. The students involved have shown great patience, perseverance and dedication and we are delighted that they managed to achieve their goal this year.

Volunteering and Fundraising Award

The winner of this award has shown a quiet dedication to volunteering regularly with an individual who had become unresponsive following a stroke. Their carefully prepared sessions produced a profound and immediate response from the individual completely changing the way they reacted to external stimuli. The family and supporting charity are incredibly grateful for the dedication and commitment of this student.

Digital Communities Award

The winner of this award has established a strong community online despite their usual activities being particularly affected by lockdown restrictions. The panel were impressed by their frequent, varied and well-attended socials and their use of a wide-range of technology including Discord, Remo, Strava and Glimpse. This student group also focused strongly on wellbeing throughout the year with weekly wellbeing chats with their Equality and Welfare Officer and a number of fitness-related activities and challenges to engage their members and create a strong sense of community.

Campaigns Award

The winner of this award worked tirelessly to see their campaign come to life and has laid the foundations, not only for this campaign, for better representation for the students they represent right across the University.

Enriching Education Award

The winner of this award has made great efforts to be as inclusive and active as possible despite the pandemic and have been supportive and understanding of how hard this year has been for everyone. The introduction of a support buddy network has been particularly helpful for new first year students to make sure they feel supported academically and emotionally.

Contribution to Student Media Award

The winner of this award has produced high-quality content throughout the year, organising interviews with high profile people and making important issues digestible for a student audience. Through use of techniques such as Freedom of Information requests and networking, they have kept the student body up to date on key messages, beating local and national news in reporting stories such as the first confirmed Covid-19 case in Bristol. They have covered a wide range of topics, including the toppling of the Colston Statue, and their video of the Kill The Bill protest reached over 350,000 people. They have also focused on the development of new reporters to ensure that future years are also successful.

Online Event of the Year

The winner of this award organised a large-scale event that had a clear impact on its members and the wider community. They managed to recreate the feel and scale of an in-person event online with attendees noting it set the gold standard for these events in future.
Their innovative and creative approach to hosting the event wowed the judging panel.

Equality and Diversity Award

The winner of this award was described in their nomination as a connector of people, and whilst no award would be praise enough, they truly deserve recognition for all that they have done not only this year, but over the past 4 years at university, working tirelessly for marginalised communities.

Best New Student Group

The winner of this award has excelled at creating an inclusive and vibrant community, despite being relatively unknown within the university previously. They have worked hard to ensure their group is financially sustainable and have secured a solid foundation on which they can build on in future years. The panel particularly noted the open, fun and accessible attitude of the group and the opportunities available to new members.

#WeAreBristol Club of the Year

The winner of this award has flourished this year despite the significant restrictions it has had to endure due to COVID. Despite this, the club managed to run over 20 Give It A Go sessions in the space of a month, with 362 total signups. Their commitment to community building within the club has been exemplary, with a wide range of socials being hosted online, a new family scheme introduced, solid alumni engagement and celebrating player commitment through a player of the week scheme. They were the first sports club to reach Gold Accreditation and have continued to impress throughout the year.

Society of the Year

The winner of this award has had a fantastic year and sets a benchmark for other groups. They have gone above and beyond to achieve the society’s fundamental goals of providing a highly satisfying student experience whilst support each individual member both pastorally and academically. They have shown a clear commitment to equality via an accountable action plan on their website and have successfully rebranded the society this year, making it more appealing to new members. They are Gold Balloon Accredited and were shortlisted at the National Societies and Volunteering Awards.

Outstanding Individual Achievement in Partnership with The University of Bristol

Due to the strength of the nominations in this category, the panel decided to have two winners.

The first winner of this award is proactive, creative and inspirational. They have led their student group successfully through the pandemic and created a family scheme to support member welfare resulting in high member engagement and 100% satisfaction in the Rate My Group survey. They led the creation of a network of 13 other societies, establishing a UK-wide teaching programme across the year that has significantly reduced the costs for all groups involved and has kept 14 societies running despite challenging circumstances. They have also secured teaching from internationally renowned salsa experts and publicised the use of bamboo to offer socially distanced partner dancing, with the society’s video of this activity reaching over 20,000 people.

The second winner of this award is incredibly hard working and has organised lots of events this year. They have led multiple successful campaigns, collaborated with Epigram on a webinar series and built relationships with cultural societies. The panel particularly recognised their work on decolonisation including their involvement in setting up and supporting decolonisation working groups across the University. They have also worked on tackling discrimination on campus, improving mental health services for BAME students and amplifying student voices, particularly those of women, BAME and Muslim students.
